Dr Ian C. Fulton B.V.Sc., M.Sc., F.A.C.V.Sc.Equine ClinicIan was born in Ballarat developed his desire to become a veterinarian from his father Len who was one of the founding members of practice. Ian graduated from Melbourne University in 1983 and began private practice for 1 year in Kyabram and then 2 years in an equine practice in Adelaide. A residency in Equine Surgery at Michigan State University between 1987 and 1990 then followed. During this period Ian also completed a Master of Science Degree, his Thesis being on laryngeal reinnervation in the horse. In 1992 Ian passed the examination to become a member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in the Equine Surgery Chapter. In 2009 Ian also took the examination for Fellowship of the College which has resulted in his registration as a Specialist in Equine Surgery, one of only 12 registered in the state of Victoria
Ian started work at the Ballarat Veterinary Practice in 1990 and joined the Partnership in 1993. Along with past partners Kim McKellar, Peter Everist and Bruce Sidebottom and current partners Brian Anderson and Andrew Cust, Ian has helped build and develop the Equine Clinic at Miners Rest into the facility that exists today.
Ian's special interest is laryngeal reinnervation in horses. Following his Masters Degree from Michigan State University, Ian has operated on over 300 horses suffering from laryngeal hemiplegia or "roaring" as it is commonly known. The nerve muscle pedicle graft that Ian helped develop while at Michigan State University is only performed at a few Veterinary centres around the world. Further research to enhance the technique has been undertaken at Michigan State University, Melbourne University and most recently (2011) at the National Veterinary School of Maisons-Alfort in Paris all of which Ian has had input into.
Ian is frequent presenter at conferences in Australia and overseas. In 2003, Ian and Brian Anderson where the only two invited speakers to attend a workshop on laryngeal hemiplegia for the Havemeyer Foundation in England. Recently while attending a respiratory surgery workshop in Paris, Ian was called to give an impromptu talk on laryngeal reinnervation to the delegates. In 2011 Ian with the assistance of Brian Anderson has re-written the book chapter of laryngeal surgery for Auer and Stick’s ”Equine surgery”, one of the premier, world renowned texts on equine surgery.
Ian since 1999 has travelled to Singapore, Macau and Kuala Lumpur on a regular basis to perform surgery and consult for trainers at the racetracks there. Ian regularly attends yearling sales for radiograph and horse assessments.
Ian has been a committee member of the Ballarat Turf Club since 2004 and is currently President of the Club. In 2010/11 Ian has been the Chairman of the Stakeholder Committee as part of the Executive of Equine Veterinarians Australia. While thoroughbred and standardbred race horses make up a large part of his work, Ian is always happy to provide service to all breeds of horses.
